Will You Risk Not Having Health Insurance When Traveling To Canada?

Canada has a universal public health insurance program (Medicare) that usually covers the cost of most injuries and illnesses for citizens, meaning that individuals requiring dental or medical attention can visit doctors and hospitals with no bills to pay. However, some areas of health care aren’t covered by the governmental plan and travellers from other countries or new residents may not have access to the free health care, making short-term insurance a must. Suffering a medical emergency in a foreign country, even one as close as Canada, can empty your wallet very quickly.

Most short-term health insurance providers offer insurance for periods from as little as a few days to up to a year. Considering that many travellers to Canada can visit for only six months per year, health insurance coverage for longer periods may be unnecessary. However, individuals planning to enter and leave the country frequently over the course of a year should look into coverage that is as long as possible.

If you have health insurance in your own country, you can check with the insurance provider to see if your current coverage will also cover any accident or illness while travelling abroad, as you may not need a separate short-term insurance while on vacation or business. United States insurance companies can provide extra insurance for travellers to Canada based on the time spent out-of-country and the limits of coverage required. While health care costs in Canada are relatively lower than costs in the United States, you can estimate that a hospital stay in Canada might average $3,000 a day and having insurance coverage limits of approximately $50,000 is a good idea.

Compare costs between insurance companies and find out ahead of time what medical needs are covered and what aren’t. Never assume that the worst won’t happen, as it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Also, do work with an insurance company that is professional and that carries a strong reputation. While unknown companies may have cheaper rates, choosing an insurance provider with a name most people recognize is the best decision. Be careful of deductibles, as they’ll affect the overall cost of the insurance coverage. Higher deductibles lower rates and while paying out of pocket may seem feasible at the time you agree to take short-term insurance coverage, you may find yourself in serious medical straits without the available cash or funds required for treatment.

A consideration about requiring short-term health insurance for Canada is whether the individual has a pre-existing condition, as most short-term insurance plans will not cover costs relating to existing situations. Short-term health insurance is for emergencies only and for medical attention that is sudden or unplanned. Evacuation is something to look into, should you need to return to your home country or place of residence quickly. Many insurance providers don’t offer the option of covering costs of evacuation, and the procedure could be expensive. Also, include dental insurance in your coverage if possible, as many people overlook this aspect but find themselves requiring emergency oral care.

Always carry identification on you, as well as information or a policy card that lets emergency attendants know that you have insurance coverage. Your identification should include the provider and policy name, effective dates, and as much pertinent coverage information as possible.

Planning a trip outside Canada? A travel tip you simply can’t afford to ignore

Your holidays are booked, your bags are packed and you think you have everything you need—money, passport, tickets, and clothing for every occasion. What more could you possibly require?

For almost 41% of Canadians who do not always travel with it, the answer is emergency medical travel insurance. Whether simply forgotten or deemed unnecessary, the fact is that travel health insurance should be a must-have before you leave the country.

When you are away from home even the most minor injuries or illnesses can become a major expense. So while an accident or illness can happen anywhere at anytime, emergency medical travel insurance helps to protect you from the unexpected costs that can come with a visit to a doctor or hospital outside of your home country.

Consider for example the following estimates: A stay in a US hospital typically costs about $2,500 Canadian per day. Even more shocking is that if your condition is serious and you require intensive care, it is not uncommon that you would end up paying about $10,000 per day.

If you’re not worried about the costs, because you believe your province’s health insurance plan will cover it, make sure you look into your province’s coverage first. You may be surprised to learn that if your province’s health coverage does extend outside of Canada it will likely be limited.

For example, if you are an Ontario resident travelling outside of Canada you will be covered for emergency care from a physician but only for as much as that service would have cost in Ontario. And, if you need to stay in a hospital to receive emergency services you are covered up to $400 per day for intensive, complex care. If it is less intensive, the maximum is $200.

Why risk it, when emergency medical travel insurance is so inexpensive?
There’s a good chance you’ve spent hundreds, if not thousands of dollars on your trip. For a few extra dollars, you can protect yourself by ensuring you get the attention you need, when you need it while not having to worry about how your emergency treatment will get paid.

The following travel health insurance quotes can be found easily online and show how little emergency medical travel insurance actually costs:

• For travellers aged 16 to 40 years, emergency medical travel insurance is available for as little as $15 for a 2 week trip—or for as little as $26 for an annual travel health insurance policy that covers you for every 2 week trip you take in a year.
• For travellers aged 41 to 55 years, emergency medical travel insurance is available for as little as $15 for a 2 week trip—or for as little as $27 for an annual travel health insurance policy that covers you for every 2 week trip you take in a year.
• For travellers aged 56 to 59 years, emergency medical travel insurance is available for as little as $21 for a 2 week trip—or for as little as $28 for an annual travel health insurance policy that covers you for every 2 week trip you take in a year.

Quotes are for single and annual trip emergency medical insurance for a resident of Ontario travelling overseas or to the US.

Without emergency medical travel insurance, an illness or injury could not only ruin your vacation but would likely have financial consequences for years to come. Why risk it when emergency travel health insurance costs so little and can save you so much? Not to mention the peace of mind it will give you knowing you're covered.

Don’t leave home without travel health insurance. Compare emergency medical travel insurance quotes online today and get the coverage you need for your travels. It is a travel tip that could save you thousands of dollars.

If your vacation plans include travel any where in Canada this summer, consider a departure from the everyday and charter a course for the gentle pleasures of Prince Edward Island. Your Canada travel itinerary would not be complete without a stay here.

Once on the Island, marvel at miles and miles of beautiful white, champagne, pink or red sand beaches. On Prince Edward Island shorelines your eyes will soar as high as a seabird and beyond to the top of the red sandstone cliffs that overlook the ocean.

If fishing is your forte, Prince Edward Island has a wealth of opportunity for the duration of the summer months. Charter a deep sea fishing expedition with friends and you could well wind up with Tuna, marlin or even shark as your reward for a long day’s work, and well worth it. For something with less adventure, cast into the still waters beyond the bridge or off the end of a pier and Mackerel could soon find its way to the end of your line. For freshwater fishing, Brook or Rainbow trout could make fly-fishing in any one of PEI’s winding rivers the perfect day trip.

PEI offers not only Canada's birthplace, but also a spectacular seascape and equally stunning landscape, rich and resplendent in rolling dunes, wetlands, lush fertile farmer’s fields, and the sand and the high pitched cliffs. The diverse habitat of our special Island is home to boundless types of plant and wildlife, including the endangered Piping Plover.

Travel to the edge of Canada and from there, continue onwards across the marvel that is the Confederation Bridge and until you find yourself at the sapphire blue of the water’s edge, then dip your toes in the warmest ocean waters north of Virginia. This is everything a vacation on this Gentle Island was meant to be. Everything and more.

Explore Cavendish, the home of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s beloved classic Anne of Green Gables, one of the Island’s main attractions. Hike or bike our green rolling hills. Then spend some time visiting craft shops in our quaint Island villages. Our pottery, woodworking, tapestries and quilts are as much a fabric of life on the Island as our rich history.

The perfect end to a perfect day should always include watching a magnificent Island sunset as it dips into the ocean. And the perfect night should remain at the water’s edge, drinking in the tranquility that abounds. Be sure, however, to savor far, far more than just the ambience. Prince Edward Island is renowned for its seafood as would be expected so take the time to linger over your lobsters, order tons of tuna steaks, or chow down on the fresh baked bread that is certain to accompany your bowl of clam chowder, served piping hot and rich with cream or dairy products from an island farm, and thickened with the natural agent that is the Prince Edward Island potato.

All of this awaits you and more on Canada’s east-coast jewel, The Gentle Island. All of this, and more.

Real estate is one of the oldest forms of investing known to man. It is easy, once you know how to invest in real estate. As an investor, you’ll purchase a number of houses or pieces of land at a very low price. If you develop it properly, then say ten years later you can sell the land for a profit. This means that you will sell it for more than what you initially paid for it.

Real estate investing can be done in any part of the world. The world population is growing and expanding on a continuous basis. This means that now, more than ever, there are people buying land and property. Land prices continue to rise in Canada, and that means that real estate will continue to be one of the best investment opportunities in the country. One website ideal for investors looking for cash flow and also allows for buying and selling cash flow properties is http://www.incomepropertycanada.com

Real estate offers greater profit potential, compared to other forms of investment. Not every piece of land will always turn out to be a winner. Despite the great potential in profit, some cases are high risks. So you will want to be sure to carefully research and study your real estate investments.

One problem that many real estate investors face is lack of liquidity. Liquid assets are those that can be easily converted into cash. This is similar to stocks and bonds. Most real estate investments can take years before you can actually make a profit. So it is not the best decision to tie up all of your assets in real estate investments. Your financial situation will be an indicator as to how much you can wisely invest in properties and real estate.

Many people do not understand the difference between investors and speculators. Speculators buy land with the intentions to make a very quick sale and fast profits. They will not hold land for a long period of time. An investor, looks for long –term profits. They will usually buy only what he can afford to keep for an indefinite period of time.

If you are a new in this field, you will want to refrain from doing any speculation until you become more informed. You will need to devote a considerable amount of time to study and research your property investment prospects. It is also wise to network and consult with others who are doing things, especially specialists.

If you currently own a home, then you’ve already made a very successful investment. Before searching for areas to invest, you will need to consider the condition of your own house. If you plan on selling your home, good landscaping and cleanliness have been known to considerably increase the value of your home.

Buying run-down homes and restoring them for selling or renting purposes can reap profits. The advantages of selling are that you can build up equity. The advantages of renting are that you can build a stream of positive cash flow. But, before you do this, you will need to consider some factors and do the math including a margin of safety.

One of them is that you must know something about the architecture of the home. You need to get an idea of how much it will cost to remodel the house and fix it up. You want to improve the house but not over improve it. You will also need to evaluate the neighborhood of the house. Study the shopping areas, schools, transportation facilities, and people in the neighborhood carefully.

By carefully doing your research when it comes to real estate investing, you will be able to systematically set up steady streams of income.

The second largest country in the world should by no means stand in the shadow of its more boisterous southern neighbor. Canada's 10 million square kilometers of land, lakes and life brings its own signature flavor to the North American continent. Travel through Canada is a truly mind-opening experience for even the most seasoned vacationer.

The region has been inhabited since the retreat of the last ice age, creating nearly 10,000 years of aboriginal history. Vikings roamed Canada's arctic shores long before Europeans began bickering over land rights during the 16th century. The French settlers founded Quebec City in 1608 while British explorers populated the Atlantic seaboard and Hudson Bay. European wars exacerbated Franco-British tensions until the American Revolution sent British refugees north, tipping the balance away from the French. Canada was finally unified under a constitution in 1867, while maintaining ties to the British crown. Since then, a large Quebec sovereignty movement has emerged in the French speaking province and has gained momentum at the federal level.

Canada's Untainted Urban Gems
Canada's cities are as diverse as its territory is expansive. French-speaking Montreal is the largest city in Quebec and arguably the liveliest in Canada. After the 1976 Montreal Olympics, the Biodome de Montreal filled in the empty stadium with four actively maintained ecosystems and numerous living exhibits. The collection of species is nothing short of phenomenal. Montreal has a thriving museum culture (buy a 3-museum pass) and an irresistible nightlife, boasting the largest dance floor in the country and a pioneering music scene with an eclecticism not to be found elsewhere. Travel west into Canada's serene backwoods to discover Vancouver, a metropolitan diamond in the rough of British Columbia's rugged wilderness. Ski Whistler's nearby slopes or enjoy a day of sailing, then flex your cosmopolitan muscle in the evening with a stroll through the acclaimed Vancouver Art Gallery and appetizers at Canada Place. Visit Vancouver for a taste of Canada's blossoming multiculturalism and international flavor. For a slower and more intimate pace, discover Nova Scotia's capital of Halifax in the northeast. This revamped harbor town has become Canada's Hollywood, with a large number of movies and shows being filmed along the charming avenues.

Unlimited Supply of Adventure
Canada's Northwest and Yukon Territories offer some of the most pristine stretches of natural beauty in North America, along with the best light show around complements of the Aurora Borealis. Kluane National Park protects Yukon's World Heritage Sites and Canada's highest peak. In Alberta, Banff and Jasper National Parks provide the most spectacular views from the Canadian Rockies and a visit to Canada's Glacier National Park, British Columbia, is imperative to witness the retreating ancient glaciers. With 39 National Parks and Reserves, Canada provides an infinite stock of breathtaking encounters.

Due to Canada's extreme northern latitude, travel is best enjoyed during the summer months of July and August, even if the days are extremely long or endless. Winter sports can be enjoyed in many resorts year-round; however, December and January tend to be unbearably cold and dark, particularly in the northern regions. There are plenty of sites offering information on how to apply for a Canadian Immigration Visa and many more offering services (paid of course) to help you do it. One of the major issues I had during the immigration process was the actual move itself and what happens when you arrive. I have received plenty of emails through my information website, onestopimmigration-canada.com, asking for additional help and advice about what forms are required, what to expect at the Canadian customs and what to do when they first arrive in Canada.

I won’t pretend this article will answer all questions for everybody, but I’ll be giving as much background as I can with more, detailed information backing it up from the website in the text or by links to the appropriate authority. I’ll start with one of the biggest headaches – the house sale (if you own) and packing up for the move.

Packing Up

When it comes to moving house there are several theories as when to put the house up for sale. Basically, we were told to wait until called for medicals as at least then you are over half way through the process. We were lucky in that we had somewhere to go, so we put the house on the market as we just wanted to have it sold and out of our hair! Even then, as "Our Story" shows, we had trouble. If you own your house you need to asses the local housing market and though its always a gamble, plan your house sale and know at what stage in the immigration process you will put it up for sale.

Everyone’s circumstances are different, but once the visa is issued, you only have 12 months from the date of your MEDICALS to physically land in Canada. One big worry I had was that we wouldn’t be able to sell the house quickly which in turn would delay our landing. If you miss the 12 month deadline, you will probably have to redo the medicals at a fair cost and then resubmit form there. Or you could land in Canada with your house unsold back in your native country with all the problems that entails. With many people’s houses being their main source of settling funds, you’ll need to have that money in the bank as soon as you can after landing.

If there is anyway you can find temporary accommodation then to have the house sold is one less headache you need when you are moving countries. You may pay rent for a while but at least you know what is in the bank when you arrive in Canada and this allows you to budget properly for your new life.

We used the whole exercise to get rid of all our old or unwanted things and start again. It comes down to economics if it costs more to insure, store and ship something than its worth. The decision on whether to insure or not is a personal choice and depends upon the value of the items you are shipping and don't forget to take into account any excess fees you have to pay in the event of damage or losses. You will need to build a list of all the items you are bringing into Canada and give their values in Canadian dollars.

This is probably easiest to take it from the inventory drawn up by the packing company – give as accurate assessment of value as you can but don’t spend weeks on it. If you have a box of kids toys for example – put your best guess at the value on the list as follows:

1. Box of assorted used kids toys C$100.00

2. Box of photographs No commercial value

3. Queen size bedC$850.00

And so on. You will be expected to have several copies of your packing list and a form B4 (Goods to follow) with it upon your arrival so make sure you have at least 3 copies in your hand luggage. Its ok to have too many but a pain if you don’t have enough!!

You will also need a similar list for any items you bring with you on the day of arrival and also any other subsequent shipments (we had an extra large box of things couriered in a totally separate shipment just before we left).

The chances are you will be using a specialist international moving company to move your possessions to Canada. Depending upon where you are moving from, you may have a long wait for your things to arrive at their final destination. You may also decide to store the property in your home country while you find the home of your dreams so make sure you allow for storage charges and extra insurance. These charges soon mount up and can give you a nasty surprise.

One thing I’ll say about the moving companies is that you are paying them for a service, if they are a good company they will be able to advise on the correct paperwork etc and formalities that will ensure a smooth arrival and customs clearance in Canada. You don’t need your shipment to be turned away from the port of entry (very expensive when they order its return to the original port of departure) or you end up liable for extra taxes etc. because of incorrect paperwork. You may well be able to have it repaid once you prove it is legitimate but you will still be out of pocket in the short term.

Most shipping agencies charge by the cubic foot and have several schemes offering different rates - "share a container" or "Full container". The Full container service will have the container packed and sealed at your residence. The shared container service will see your possessions packed at your residence and then transported to the companies’ depot. Once there it is packed with other items to complete a container.

Pets

As with everything, your circumstances depend on whether you'll bring any pets over with you. There are strict rules to be adhered to for the Importation Of Animals - as with most countries - so please ensure you fully understand what is required.

There are a few things to consider - if you are going into rented accommodation on your arrival having a pet will seriously restrict your choice of home. The local bylaws concerning pets are fairly strictly enforced leading to large fines if broken so make sure you understand them!

Make sure any inoculations are in date and you have the records. Also, it isn't cheap to transport animals so bear that in mind too. Its worth delaying the arrival of your pet if possible to give you time to settle in and complete all the arriving formalities with one less thing to worry about. After a long and stressful journey do you really need to stay at the airport for several hours while the vet inspects your pet and completes all the necessary paperwork? Then you have to organise the transport to your accommodation (if they take pets) with a stressed out animal!

At the end of the day, moving countries is enough of an upheaval without leaving the family pet behind. That was the case for us so we brought our 3 year old Golden Retriever "Boris" over about 2 weeks after us. Boris was in kennels for 2 weeks prior to his departure during which time he had a custom travel kennel made for him and time to get used to it. All the necessary paperwork and vets examinations were handled by the shipper and he was booked on a scheduled flight. On the day of the flight he wasn't put in the kennel until the last minute before loading which kept the time in the kennel restricted.

When we collected him all the paperwork was in order and all we had to do was go to the customs hall in the Calgary Terminal (pay a C$30.00 import duty) and then return to the cargo terminal with the release paperwork to collect one seriously excited dog!

Arrival Day

I guess it would be the worst nightmare if you landed without the correct documentation so hopefully we can help avoid that! It is essential that these items are carried in your HAND LUGGAGE and not packed away in a suitcase. All the Immigration processing takes place before you reclaim your baggage.

Your Canadian Immigrant visa and confirmation of Permanent Residence for each family member with you.

A valid Passport or other official travel document for each family member (normally must have a minimum of 6 months left before expiry).

Sufficient funds to cover your living expenses for 6 months.

Two copies of a detailed list of ALL the personal or Household items you are bringing with you. These lists must state how much the items are worth in Canadian Dollars.

Two copies of a list of items to follow - if you are shipping things later. Again, the values in Canadian Dollars must be shown.

For the goods to follow we used the insurance values we had stated to make it easier (as described above) and had made detailed lists of everything to come and in what shipment they were in. The Canadian Customs and Border Crossing Agency (CBSA) are responsible for enforcing the laws and provide the form B4 for personal effects accounting. You should receive a checklist and detailed instruction on what is required for your arrival in Canada when you receive your immigration visa’s I know when we had our visa's issued they were accompanied by a checklist of documents.

If you have any questions please contact your nearest High Commission or the CBSA BEFORE you leave your home country – one good tip is to ensure any important documents or transcripts are translated into English or French as required (if they aren’t already) before you arrive . For a more detailed overview go to our Customs and Immigration page.

It may be advisable to carry any other personal documents in your hand luggage as well. The Citizenship and Immigration Canada E-Book “A Newcomers Introduction to Canada” gives excellent advice on this matter.

As with most countries around the world, Canada takes its security extremely seriously and will not bend the rules for anybody. The guidelines are quite straight forward and to ensure a problem free arrival its imperative you stick to them. There are two main pamphlets available to assist you depending upon your circumstances.

RC4151 - Settling in Canada is the document to guide you if you are settling in Canada for the first time or after being abroad for over 3 years (For Canadians)

.

Also, for those who are moving to Canada to study or work temporarily the pamphlet RC4220 Entering Canada to Study or to Work will be your guide.

Ensure all your possessions you bring with you are listed with values in Canadian Dollar have two copies ready - one to keep and one for the officials. To speed things up when you land you can download and print the forms B4 and B4A from the CBSA website. It’s best to have all your lists typed out to make life easier for the officials. Also, you will need the same forms for the goods to follow (if any). No import tax or duties are payable on settlers personal and household effects as long as you have owned, possessed and used them prior to arrival in Canada. If possible try and find any receipts and/or registration documents to support this.

There is also a scheme for wedding gifts if you are newly married or about to be married within 3 months of your arrival in Canada. It is worth noting that any items you will be using for commercial purposes will be subject to regular duties at the current rates.

With the recent international clamp downs on terrorism and money laundering it is essential that if you physically carry on your person, over C$10,000 or foreign equivalent in cash, bonds or securities you report it to the customs official. There isn't any limit on settler’s funds but failure to follow the rules may result in the seizure of the cash and/or big fines. See the pamphlet RC 4321.

Follow The New Rules When Visiting Canada and Mexico

Summary:

If you are in the United States and plan to visit Canada or Mexico, you need to follow the new rules.

Article Body:

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reminds travelers that beginning January 31, 2008, border crossers will be asked to present documents denoting citizenship and identity when entering the United States through land and sea ports of entry. This change primarily affects United States and Canadian citizens, who have previously been permitted entry by oral declaration alone, and marks the transition toward standard and consistent documents for all travelers entering the country. It is also the start of a more robust and concerted public education campaign, intended to inform travelers of document requirements which will be implemented next year.

“For the safety of the American people, the United States cannot have an honor system at the border,” said Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. “Requiring secure and reliable documentation at our borders will drastically reduce security vulnerabilities posed by permitting entry based on oral declarations alone. As travelers become accustomed to carrying documents to cross the border, and as we move to more stringent documentation requirements, our border officers will be able to more quickly and confidently identify cross-border travelers.”

Beginning Jan. 31 of this year, U.S. and Canadian citizens ages 19 and older should no longer expect that an oral declaration alone will be sufficient to prove identity and citizenship for entry into the country. Instead, travelers will be asked to present documentation from a specified list of acceptable documents when entering the U.S. at land and sea ports of entry. Examples include birth certificates and driver’s licenses. A complete list of acceptable documents is available to travelers at ports of entry and is also available at www.cbp.gov. Travelers who do not present one of these documents may be delayed while U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers attempt to verify their identity and citizenship. Children ages 18 and under will only need to present a birth certificate.

In order to further secure our borders against illegal entry, the U.S. will no longer be able to admit travelers based on nothing more than a person’s oral assertion of citizenship. During October to December 2007 alone, CBP officers reported 1,517 cases of individuals falsely claiming to be U.S. citizens. Last month, CBP officials determined that an individual falsely claiming to be a U.S. citizen was wanted for homicide in California. This individual was paroled for entry into the U.S. and transported into the custody of the San Diego Sheriff’s Department. Separately, multiple Government Accountability Office and Inspector General reports have highlighted weaknesses associated with oral declarations and substandard documentation.

Standard and consistent documentation is critical for border officials to accurately determine admissibility into the United States. The Jan. 31 change is a step forward from the largely subjective standard that allowed travelers to present an almost limitless array of documents, such as baptismal certificates, to satisfy CBP officers of their citizenship. This change will allow frontline officers to standardize inspections against a narrower class of documents, and CBP has protocols in place to verify the authenticity of suspicious driver licenses and guard against the use of counterfeit or altered licenses.

DHS has maintained a consistent public awareness and information campaign to ensure that the traveling public is aware of the new travel documentation requirements under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). The transition beginning Jan. 31 will allow travelers to become accustomed to the need to present appropriate documents. Travelers who apply for a passport card, passport, Trusted Traveler Program cards, or other secure documentation denoting both citizenship and identity in response to the Jan. 31 change will not need to take additional steps to meet the final WHTI requirements upon full implementation in June 2009.

U.S. citizens may begin applying in advance for the new U.S. Passport Card on Feb. 1, 2008, in anticipation of land border travel document requirements. The U.S. Department of State expects that cards will be available and mailed to applicants in spring 2008.

Although DHS was on schedule to begin implementation of the new requirements as early as summer 2008, the fiscal year 2008 Appropriations Bill passed by Congress last month restricts the department from implementing these new requirements until June 2009.

After my official Montreal bike tour, my individual explorations of the Lachine Canal and my chat with André from Ça Roule, I decided to go for a little stroll to explore Montreal’s Port area which was hustling and bustling with celebrations on this Canada Day. I strolled out on Jacques Cartier Pier to an outdoor concert stage where two well-known Canadian singers, Kim Richardson and Sylvie Desgroseillers were enchanting the audience with Mo-Town and R&B melodies.

I walked east and happened onto a huge playground area on the little island in the Bassin Bonsecours that was a family entertainment zone. Kids were sliding up and down and in and out of a whole variety of huge inflatable slides. Freestyle skiers were jumping off a large ramp and performing summersaults and various aerial acrobatics. The whole area was packed with people enjoying themselves on a beautiful summer day. I walked up Place Jacques Cartier and into a small pedestrian street called Rue des Amables which is full of portrait artists and galleries. At the end of this little street I found my dinner destination: Galiano’s.

Galiano’s is located in a 200 year-old building on a small cobble-stoned street in Old Montreal. Formerly a "boîte à chanson" it opened its doors eight years ago. The restaurant stretches over two floors with an open area in the middle and a wooden staircase leading up to the second floor with seating on an interior balcony. The street-side patio adds additional seating capacity and ambience to this rustic restaurant.

Always a big fan of Italian cuisine, I was looking forward to a filling meal after a day packed with exercise and activities. The whole area around the restaurant and Old Montreal in general was absolutely hustling and bustling with people and everyone was in good spirits, ready to celebrate since it was Canada Day. Street performers were entertaining the crowd. At just before 6 pm it was still a bit early and I was fortunate to find a seat in the lounge area of the restaurant that features several tables flanking an arrangement of leather couches in front of the fireplace.

For a few minutes I was able to catch the owner, John Tsinas, to find out more about this culinary establishment. John is part of Montreal’s famous Antonopoulos family that owns a variety of hospitality restaurants and hotels in Old Montreal. His uncles are silent partners in Galiano’s. John’s younger brothers Manny and Peter also work with him in the business. At 40 years of age John is the oldest, and the two other brothers are each five years apart. John says that Manny is the people person and today Manny was seating customers, tryig to keep up with the sheer onslaught of customers that were just streaming into Galiano’s.

Manny is also the man with the creative ideas and he was the one that came up with the idea for lounge area and some of the new decorating styles featured at Galianos. Another new idea is to use a small balcony area above the entrance door as a location for a DJ or some live music. And a wine cellar next to the entrance is presently under construction and will be opened in the near future.

John has a lot of experience in the hospitality industry: he started working in the restaurant business at age 14 and has worked his way up all the way from the bottom. He even ran a food warehouse for McGill University which included restocking the vending machines and was a waiter at three different restaurants prior to opening Galiano's. John added that he still thinks like an employee and because of his hands-on experience he always treats his staff members with respect. His working style is very hands-on, he says that today he will be calling out the orders in his kitchen and preparing them for the waiters.

Galiano’s is known for its Italian cuisine and its generous portion sizes. Everything is made from scratch at Galiano’s. John mentioned their signature dishes: Scaloppini alla Veronica, their Antipasto Misto, a Filetto Tre Sapori, home made Lasagna as well as their Quattro Stagioni Pizza. John recommended that I try Galiano’s Calamari Fritti. Just about 10 minutes after my order a steaming plate of juicy and tasty calamari arrived, the perfect introduction to a filling meal. I followed it up with a Galiano Salad: a huge plate of salad with cold cuts and cheese. John wasn’t kidding when he talked about huge portion sizes!

John of course had to get back to work after our little chat, but I thoroughly enjoyed my evening meal and by the time I was finished, the lineup was stretching all the way out the door and down the street. Galiano’s is obviously a favourite destination for many in Old Montreal and for me it was a great starting point for my evening discoveries which would include the official Canada Day Celebrations and a big concert in the Old Port of Montreal.

Hunting has moved past the origins where it was the search for food only, as today it is a major sport and the competition can be fierce. There are few places on the planet to hunt that are better than Canada. The proof positive of this is the number of trophies and world records that are broken in this land every year. There is truly some great hunting to be found in this wonderful country.

The best thing about Canada is that there are still massive amounts of untouched acreage to be used as prime hunting grounds. Primitive cabins located deep in the woods with a lake and so on are very popular with the hunting parties from the US. In these cabins you can find solace in the fact that just outside there is prime hunting to be found right outside the door. No more do you have to spend long hours driving to reach the site for the hunt. Some of the finest trophies have been taken at these secluded areas making them highly sought after.

The game is the best thing about Canada. Because of the climate Canada features many species of game that are not found in other parts of North America. The larger species, such as moose and elk are found all over the country, which makes for some prime hunts. The danger factor when seeking out the moose is part of the excitement and the larger the specimen the better it is.

There is also the hunting laws that should be considered. Unlike other parts of the world, the Canadian hunting laws are rather laid back and much more relaxed than that of the US. The Canadian government is tapped in too the fact that hunting is an effective method of population control when it comes to the species that are actively hunted. When the population of a certain species gets out of control it can then pose a serious threat to human life. So the government in Canada allows for more animals to be taken in order to protect the people that live in certain areas.

There is a definite pleasure to hunting in Canada. The bears that live in Canada are by far larger than that of the other areas in the world. This is why so many people are flocking to the country to hunt some of the bears that are living there. The bear population exploded in the last few decades and the number of bear attacks increased many times over. When this started happening, the government opened hunting on many of the species that were at one time protected from being hunted.

If you are looking for some of the best hunting in the world you should certainly take the time to go to Canada. There is nothing that you can not do when it comes to hunting for all of your favorite species. The hunting in Canada is among the best in the world. Just be sure to take the time to get all of the license and permits that you will need. There are stiff penalties for those that try to poach.

Online US & Canada Shopping Forum

Word Count:

Summary:

Shopping takes time and money, but quite often after making a purchase we find out that we could have bought a better product for a cheaper price or that when we try to return the item to the store, it's unbelievably difficult. I believe we could easily avoid situations like this if we could communicate with other fellow shoppers and seek their advice when needed.

Keywords:

shopping, shopping forum, online shopping, web forum, shopping discussion, shopping advice, online shopping forum, web shopping forum, internet shopping

Article Body:

I believe I won’t be alone when I say that shopping take time, especially when making major purchases or trying to buy rare items. Shoppers like me do as much research as they can on the item of interest, to buy the best one available at the lowest possible price. I usually do my research on the item first, reading customer reviews, and then I look for the stores that offer the best price, after that comes the time to do my research on those stores and that’s where it gets complicated. There are great resources available on the web that offer help on choosing the right thing, but sometimes one needs to connect with other fellow shoppers and ask them something, be it their shopping experiences or just some advice.
With the online shopping revolution many stores became globally available. Even if they have physical locations only in one or two countries, they may offer worldwide shipping.

This phenomenon significantly widens the pool of shoppers who potentially could give me some advice regarding a particular store or a brand name. And since the World Wide Web was the one to globalize shopping, it is, therefore, the right place for all the shoppers to connect and discuss shopping-related issues.

While there are quite a few shopping forums, I find them very chaotic and disorganized; there are many users and no structure, making it very easy for many focused topics to go unnoticed by their target audience because of the amount of other postings and spam.

That’s when I decided to build a shopping forum that would address these issues and make it easier for people like me to seek advice from our fellow shoppers. While not everyone will appreciate the idea, I just want to let the word out, so people like me know where to go for shopping advice next time they need it.

The Edmonton area is one of the most fabulous places in Canada for shopping, at least in terms of size. The world's largest shopping mall is located here and shoppers can spend hours and even days happily wandering past the brightly lighted and attractive store displays.

West Edmonton Mall contains over 800 shops and 100 eating places and 9 world class entertainment activities. It is the number one tourist attraction in Alberta and covers the equivalent of 48 city blocks on the west side of Edmonton. There are so many things to see and do at the West Edmonton Mall that some people never bother shopping there, they just go for the entertainment features.

Galaxyland, associated with the mall since 1985 is the world's largest indoor amusement park. There are 26 full-sized rides for thrill seekers of all ages, including the Galaxy Orbiter and singular roller coaster ride that never repeats. Teens are invited to Rock 'N Ride Dance parties each school year at the Mall where from 8 to midnight, teens can get unlimited rides, watch two giant video screens and have all the danceable music anyone could ask for.

An ice rink, live performing sea lions in their own enclosure and miniature golf are just a few of the other attractions that bring people in by the thousands daily. People can enjoy window shopping Canada style and feel quite invigorated by it afterward.

Your shopping experience at West Edmonton Mall couldn't be better. There are shops for swinging seniors as well as for toddling tykes and each one is made to feel unique no matter what body size you are. Merchandise from all over the world is found in the anchor stores as well as the specialty shops that make mall shopping so interesting.

And the food experience here could keep a gourmet satisfied for months to come. There are the usual ethnic cuisines and of course fast food places, but there are some unusual experiences in food shopping as well. For example, there is health food and an Asian Market located on the theme street known as Chinatown. Two other major theme streets are found at the mall--Europa Boulevard fashioned after major European cities; and Bourbon Street, that will make you think you are entering old New Orleans.

If you decide to make a vacation out of the mall, you can choose to stay at one of the luxury hotels located at the mall and in many other locations around the city. For those who like to shop, it's the ideal vacation.

Home to hockey, Canada is a country of beautiful cities and wide open spaces. If you are considering taking a trip to the country, here is an overview of some things you might want to know.

An Overview of Canada for Travelers

The official name of the country is simply Canada. It covers an area of landmass over 3.8 million square miles in size and is the second largest country by square mileage in the world. The capital is Ottawa with a population of over 1.1 million people. Other major cities include Toronto with 4.8 million residents, Montreal with just fewer than 3.5 million people and the beautiful city of Vancouver with a population of roughly 2 million people. With its far northern location, Canada is a country with a cool climate. The farther north one goes, the colder it becomes until artic conditions apply.

Citizens of Canada are known as Canadians. The most recent study put the total population at more than 32.4 million Canadians. Of this figure, ethnicity breaks down into a wide variety of groups with no group forming a majority. Specifically, Canadians are comprised of 28 percent British-Irish heritage, 23 percent French, 15 percent general European and a whopping 26 percent are classified as mixed. Following the transfer of Hong Kong from British rule to Chinese, many citizens of Hong Kong immigrated to Canada, particularly the Vancouver area.

Religious preferences share the break down found in ethnicity. 44 percent of Canadians claim the Roman Catholic faith as their own, while 29 percent are Protestant. Other Christian and Muslim denominations are claimed by roughly 8 percent of the population.

English and French are the languages spoken in Canada. Literacy rates are 99 percent. Average life expectancy for a Canadian man is 77 years while a Canadian woman will live to 82 years of age on average.

Canada is a country with an odd segmentation. Whereas most countries tend to be divided towards eastern and western population centers, Canada can be said to be more of a north and south designation. Specifically, most of the population lives along the border with the United States and practically nobody lives in the far north given the cold.

Canada tends to be overshadowed by its neighbor to the south. This is unfortunate as the country is beautiful, the people are friendly and life is lived at a comfortable pace.

For a while my friend Theresa and I had been planning to go back to Ottawa and experience "Winterlude", Ottawa's winter festival. About three years ago we went to Ottawa, only to be rained out . Our main activity had fallen through: skating on the Rideau Canal, and even the ice sculptures had melted.

But that didn't deter us. So this past Friday we got in the car and after a pleasant 4.5 hour drive we arrived in Ottawa. After documenting my first impressions, we checked into the Lord Elgin Hotel, a historic landmark right in the heart of Ottawa.

Friday evening we explored one of Ottawa's main entertainment areas: the ByWard Market and we had a fabulous dinner at Fat Tuesdays, complete with live music and delicious Cajun food.

Saturday morning I got up early and explored the local area and took many photos in and around Parliament Hill. Then we got ready to explore one of Ottawa's main winter attractions: the Rideau Canal Skateway, the world's longest natural ice skating surface. The day was absolutely perfect and we were gliding effortlessly down the ice to our next destination: the 26th Annual Bedzz Races on Dow's Lake.

The bed race is a fabulous charity event and it's lots of fun for the audience, the participants and the organizers alike. Then I had to race off and see what else was going on at Confederation Park, one of the main Winterlude sites.

After a day full of physical exercise we discovered a historic local pub: Darcy McGee's on Sparks Street, Ottawa's pedestrian mall, and I had a chance to see how a perfect Guiness is poured, including the obligatory foam shamrock.

On Sunday morning I went to the Canadian War Museum, a fabulous new multi-media museum by the banks of the Ottawa River, and I also had a chance to visit a special exhibition called "Weapons of Mass Dissemination - the Propaganda of War". I wished I had had more time to spend here.

My next and final stop in Ottawa was a visit to the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, a unique museum housed in a former railroad tunnel. There I focussed on an exhibition by Sunil Gupta, who was born in India and moved to Montreal at age 15. Gupta explores issues of personal, sexual and cultural identity, and his highly personal images left a deep impact.

This time I didn't have time for some of Ottawa's other main attractions, such as the National Gallery or the Canadian Museum of Civilization, but I am certainly hoping to catch those next time when I go to Ottawa, maybe even this coming May, for Ottawa's famous Tulip Festival.

The largest amusement park in western Canada is Calaway Park, just outside Calgary, Alberta, Canada. When the park opened in 1982, it was much smaller than its current site, but has grown as more land was purchased for the development of more children's and thrill rides. Originally centred on Hanna-Barbera characters, the park introduced their own mascots when the licensing for these was lost. Jack Bunny and Jill O'Hare were created in the late 80s, a few years later Calaway Park started the Jack and Jill Club for children ages 3-12 that hold season passes.

The park encompasses 160 acres and offers 32 rides, suitable for both children and adults. According to 2005 statistical data, it is considered the safest theme park in North America. Dedicated to keeping this status, the staff is required to attend training seminars and safety briefings either before or during their first shift. Height restrictions are strictly enforced, and ride-employee certifications are mandatory.

The variety of rides offered at Calaway Park will make a day spent well worth the time for the entire family. The Vortex, a roller coaster with corkscrew twists and turns, is the biggest attraction. This thrill ride even has a section that briefly suspends the rider upside down, showing part of the reason for its popularity.

Shoot the Chutes and the Bumper Boat Splash Challenge are both water rides, allowing you to cool off on hot days. Among many other rides, the park also has a Mini Golf Course, a maze, a train ride and even a fishing pond for those who want a break from the excitement of the crowds. There are stage shows throughout the park, preformed for the entertainment and delight of all, along with restaurants and stalls offering a variety of food and beverages. The beautifully designated picnic areas for those wanting to bring their own food even has lockers provided for storage at a nominal fee.

After a day spent outdoors, the Delta Airport Hotel Calgary's family friendly atmosphere is a great place to unwind. The hotel is built beside the Bow River, guaranteeing a scenic view of the river, as well as the Canadian Rocky Mountains in the distance. For leisure, the hotel has a magnificent indoor swimming pool and whirlpool, while the state of the art gym allows the opportunity to work off any residual energy after a busy day. Other attractions, such as the Aero Space Museum Association of Calgary, make the Delta Airport Hotel Calgary a convenient, comfortable choice for your Canadian vacation.

Initially most service was provided by streetcars. The first TTC subway line was build in 1954 on Yonge Street and had 12 stations. The same year the commission was renamed to TTC. Slowly and as Toronto’s population increased and the city expanded, so did the number of bus routes and subway lines. Over the years the system has evolved into an extensive network of well planned bus routes that support the subway lines. The system has evolved to feature a wide network of bus routes with the subway lines as the backbone. The subway's newest line, Sheppard, opened in 2002.

Getting around in Toronto is fairly easy, every one is friendly, the transit system works great and it is open seven days a week. The TTC is the way to go.

The only thing you would have to worry about is the occasional TTC Strike
